I was honoured to host the first Accessibility Book Club session for 2026 on 27 January.
The Book Club has been an extraordinary success, now with just under 3,000 members. It started as a simple idea – as the name implies, it works like any other book club except it has a focus on books that have accessibility, disability, or related technology as as their theme or topic – and, of course, the meetings take place online.
What we – that is, Crystal Scott, Job, Farrell and myself as co-managers – didn’t expect and couldn’t have hoped for is that we have author after authore agree to come and attend the meetings to chat about their books.
This month, Reginé Gilbert came and joined us online to talk about the second edition of her book Inclusive Design for a Digital World.
Just as the book is a massive undertaking, 500+ pages covering a wide range of perspectives and topics related to inclusive design and digital accessibility, the conversation was very wide-ranging, too, giving some unique insights into how and why she came to update her original 2019 book.
It’s always a little nerve-wracking hosting these sessions – we rotate between the three co-managers – because you want to ensure an engaging, free-flowing conversation for the attendees, who can and do ask and post their own questions for the author, and for the many more who will watch the recording, like this one.
In this case, I think it was a resounding success, driven largely by Reginé’s willingness to open up and chat about anything we raised.
